Hi, Martha.
How are you doing?
I have been using MathView, now LiveMath and I really like it.
its interactive and and works easily for online practice. Also,
students don't have to purchase anything if they download the free
plugin. The package cost us $90 for a single user copy.
We also use Maple. it was cheaper than Mathematica and does
everything that we need for our Calculus students.
hope you term is going well.

We have liked the Mathview software for our, mostly Algebra and beginning Calculus classes. Although it's not the power number cruncher that Mathematica or Maple is, it's very easy for our students to learn and does great graphics and manipulates functions so that they can explore what happens. And it's WYSIWYG.
This software used to be called Theorist. As of last year, it was owned by Waterloo Maple, but has since been bought back by the original developer and the current version is called LiveMath.

Martha:
At Fresno City College we chose Maple over Mathematic a bunch of years ago
because the Maple folks were more education-friendly, and Maple was less
expensive. Maple's attitude was "Whatever we can do to help. Sure, we'll
share our algorithms, and whatever." Mathematica's was "We're here. We're
used in the workplace. Take us or leave us. Our algorithms? A trade
secret."
I now prefer Scientific Notebook, which uses a Maple engine, but without
the
context. Importing art into it is a headache, if you are trying to do cool
documents. But my students have not found any areas in which it is
inadequate for their needs.
