In the past we have used standardized tests for placement in to all math
classes. (CPT, CLM, etc.) They do not allow calcualtors.
We are presently switching to an in house placement test to place into
"upper level" math classes (Precalculus and Calculus). We discussed that we
could make a placement test requiring calculators, but we decided against
doing so, as it would give students who are familiar with graphing
calculator technology a distinct advantage - and the more familiar the
greater the advantage.
We opted to create a test which could (should) be taken without any
technology other than a pencil and piece of paper. (This test is different
than one we would have created if we were going to allow graphing calculator
technology.)
Please do not take our test as evidence that we are opposed to technology.
We use GC technology in these classes.
