Martha Haehl has written a text that is in the pilot stage at Prentice
Hall for basic math. I'm piloting it this semester; one aspect I really
like is how the students practice arithmetic skills that they might
reasonably be expected to do without a calculator, requires them to do
rounding and estimating of more complex arithmetic problems and then check
their answer with a calculator (teaching them the rare and wonderful
skill of going for the ballpark answer & looking for reasonability)
and doesn't spend much time on operations they probably will not do
without a calculator (eg long division with multi digit numbers).
Technology does have a place in the arithmetic classroom but not as a crutch.
