The German word for slope is "Steigung". When I went to school in Germany
about 25 years ago, we used to write y =3D mx + b, but some books use
y =3D mx + c and y 3D ax + b. AFAIK there are no German words for slope beg=
inning
with an m. By the way, here in Sweden, we use y =3D kx + m.

Maybe letters in the middle of the alphabet are chosen for constants of any
kind.
