"I am teaching a class of development math- Math 060 - Essential Math
(basic arithmetic) and have blind student in the class."

Peggy,

Been there. Done that. My student was taking a liberal arts math
course (Venn diagrams, truth tables, etc.) What I did was to prepare
lesson sheets on card stock (provided by the student through some
organization for the visually impaired) using Puff Paints. My
student had lost sight as a young adult and could not read Braille,
but she was able to trace the diagrams with her fingers as I
discussed them in class. It took about 1 hour for each class, to
prepare the materials for her. It structured my lectures more than I
usually do, but she managed a C+ in the course when she was hoping to
get a D.

In office hours, I wrote backwards on heavy weight aluminum foil,
turned it over, ans she traced the notes with her finger. She took
her exams in my office with me (readers are not often trained in the
symbols used for some concepts). She used a talking calculator
provided through the organization mentioned above. This might not
help for an algebra student or a student taking a course in
fundamental arithmetic (where you want the student to become aware of
the process as well as the final answer).

I don't know if this helps your student. Good luck!

Bev
