At my university, the mayor is lauching an attack against open
admissions (see below from today's Chronicle of Higher Education posting).

* NEW YORK CITY'S Mayor, Rudolph W. Giuliani, on Wednesday
called on the City University of New York to end open
enrollment, saying that the admission of poorly prepared
students had resulted in alarmingly low graduation rates, a
trend with "disastrous consequences" for the city.

It remains to be seen how this attack will play out on the
university's two-year colleges, and on the various remedial programs
including those in math.
