to paraphrase Alan Sherman, open enrollment costs nothing, and it's worth the
price.

although this is probably a reply more suited to the Bloated Administration
newsgroup, if we could either a.) stop letting any schmoe off the street
enroll, or 2.) tighten up the course-requirement loopholes that plague the
campuses where i've taught, then i would have a more pleasant time teaching
the subject at hand, rather than doing remedial teaching in algebra courses (i
teach the remedial courses, too, and love them; i just dislike having to cover
that subject matter with students allegedly prepared for algebra).
