On Jan 10 Phil Mahler wrote about a problem from Marilyn Vos Savant
concerning a sphere with a hole bored through the center. I am a high
school geometry teacher and throught it was an interesting problem. I
found, however, that I couldn't do it without calculus (so much for being
useful as a class problem) and when I did do it with elementary calculus I
got 36=BC for a solution. I would be interested in seeing Ms. Vos Savant's
solution. Thanks
