Instructors check the calculators out on the third day of class. Students
who do not turn the calculator in by the final exam receive an incomplete
as a grade and cannot register for classes for the next semester. Once they
turn it back in, the incomplete is changed to a grade. One instructor is in
charge of the whole thing and keeps the calculators in his office during
break!
The program was started by "borrowing" the money from the administration
which we will pay back as rental fees come in. We didn't have the money to
build/supply enough computer classrooms to teach these sections; our
students are generally pretty strapped for cash and don't want to pay $180
for a calculator they may only use one semester. Some students do purchase
the machines. By the way, a work study student spraypainted the covers and
backs of the machines a hideous bright yellow or pink. We have battery
rechargers set up in the math lab; students can exchange batteries when
they need them. It is a pain for instructors to check them out and check
them in but worth it.
We also use TI-92s in College Algebra (Pre-calculus), Calculus and onward.
These students buy the machines and aren't part of the rental program to
date.
