Hi-

I had a freshman student in first semester calculus last fall who came to me
after the first day of class who asked my advice about whether she should
continue in my class. I asked her what grade did she make in precalculus
and other math classes; she made A's. I asked her from what high school
did she graduate; it was a good high school. She was scared since many
students told her that calculus was a difficult course and nearly 3/4 of the
class had calculus in high school; she didn't have calculus. I told her that
I believed that she should be able to handle the course.

She had the highest grade in the class at the end of the semester. Some
who had calculus in high school got F's.

I also learned later that her placement score was one of the lowest in
the class. The placement score indicated that she should have been in
precalculus.

Placement scores are but one tool in advising students.

Best,
Larry
