Bret-

Having taught Calc 1 several times in the evening and in the summer, I have
had many high school students. I've been surprised to see that they are just
as mature as the other students and tend to have better study habits.

Here is one example of a kid's experience:

I had a really geeky high school kid this last year in my evening Calc 1...
Let's put it this way: He had "Star Trek Convention" written all over him.
I'm sure he gets made fun of at his high school even though he was a really
nice kid. BUT... in the college setting (in this class anyway), there wasn't
any of that. In fact, he was hanging around with 3 really nice (and cute)
girls in their early 20's the whole semester. They were great to him. In
other words, he was treated like the nice person that he was and not judged.

High school is an extremely harsh place to be... Whether you are one of the
bullies or one of the many victims. It might be nice for this young man to
be around some more mature people.

Just some non-mathematical input.
