Dear Members:
I teach Developmental Mathematics and I am presently taking a graduate
course
called "Internet Resources for Educators". I would like to request your help
on an
assignment which I am working on.
The course I teach has a 3-hour component of introductory algebra, taught in
a
fairly traditional manner with lecture, frequent tests, etc. In addition,
since I am assigned
the students who earned the lowest scores on the math placement test, my
students are
required to come for an additional two hours for an arithmetic tutorial,
which is self-
paced. For the Arithmetic Tutorial, I give them a 50 problem test, determine
which topics
they need to work on in arithmetic, and allow them to move as fast as they
can until they
complete the required topics and successfully pass the Exit test.
I would like to hear from others who teach Developmental Mathematics to
college
students.
1. Where do you teach?
2. What is the name of your course?
3. How many class hours are required per week?
4. Are tutors provided for the students?
5. Have you found a computer program that you feel is successful in teaching
the
remedial math?
Please respond as soon as possible. My graduate course ends on August 8,
but I
will still be interested in replies after that, because what you have to say
may help me be a
better teacher in the Fall.
Sincerely,
Margaret Forte
