Phil,
I would suggest that you address the issue with the paper in the
form of a letter to the editor. Incorporate both facts and humor in your
response. For example, an hour of instruction at most colleges in New
York State is 50 min. What about the expression "lunch hour"? The idea
that how we get the answer in mathematics is more important than the
answer is ridiculous. If the answer to the problem is the only item of
importance than a reference to the "Benjy" syndrome from 25 or so years
ago is needed. I suppose that we could get into politically correct
mathematics but maybe that is the author's point. I wonder how one would
compute the time the author spent on writing the article if we listened
to his version verses the time spent on his computer or the actual CPU
time used? The question becomes which one or ones are correct.
