Hi. I'm new to this list. To expand on Deanna's idea of student generated
tests, I've found that assigning the creation of ONE question (either FR
or MC) as a turn-in homework assignment with a comprehensive KEY
included (it must be "photocopy ready") is an excellent way to get the
students to experience test creation and review current (and often
previous) topics. I "cut and paste " to form review sheets and the next
day groups work on the created sheets. The groups must work through the
questions and rank and if necessary CORRECT them (easy, challenging,
unclear, etc) This leads to a discussion as to just what makes a "good"
question as opposed to a "trivial" one. Since I have a code which
indicates who wrote each question, IF a grade is needed (alternative
assessment is the current buzz word in my school) the students'
evaluation can be converted into a grade for the question created (rubric
is the another buzz word).
BTW I'm a high school teacher, and have used this in all levels of HS
math from "introduction to HS math" to my AP Calculus classes. For a
college format, something similar COULD be used before a midterm or
final by assigning (randomly) different topics to the students so that
you don't get 20 questions all on the same concept. Martha Green,
