Some standardized tests have open-ended questions (not multiple choice). =
A question might ask a student to solve a problem two (or more) different =
ways. Another problem might say "Explain the process you used to arrive =
at your answer." A question could ask a student to name severeal =
different problem-solving strategies: guess and check, make a list, make =
a chart, solve a simpler problem, draw a diagram, draw a graph, build a =
model.

Hello Folks:

I am asking for some help. My children took the California Achievement
Test (CAT). On the test results for math they had scores in a variety of
areas: Measurement, Estimation, Algebra, Statistics and the like. One
area was listed as Problem-Solving Strategies. I do not understand this
area. I do not know what a problem would look like that a student would
answer that would reflect the strategy he/she chose on a standardized =
test.

Could someone please give me an example of problem that assesses
problem-solving strategies within a math context. Both my children did
well overall and both did poorly in this area. This concerns me when I do
not even understans the vocabulary to able to help.

Thank you very much.
