Aloha,
For all my students (developmental and college-level), there are
assigned groups and when a test or quiz is returned (I fold over the
corner of the test with their grade and emphasize that grades are private
and no one should be pressured to divulge a grade), they go over it
together with their group members for 10 to 15 minutes while I circulate
to answer questions about grading or questions the group has not been able
to resolve. Then they turn in the corrections as part of their homework
assign.for the next class. They earn from 2 to 5 points (out of 500 to
600 total for the semester). They have to explain in words how they are
doing to problem to earn the points. This is always a struggle at the
beginning of the course because many don't understand why just the correct
answer won't earn the points, but usually by the end of the semester
almost all have got the idea. Several comment on their course evals that
they appreciated the opportunity to do the corrections.
For summer school we use exactly the same placement standards for
all students. We accept pre-req. courses from any accredited college or
placement test results from any school in the U. of Hawaii system. If
these are not available, the student must take our placement test.

I have some College Algebra students from other schools who do not have the prerequisite for the class. The registrar's office said that if their school gave them permission to take the course, they could take it, even without the prerequisite. How is this handled at your school?
