I would echo the last 2 messages. If I had to choose one method it would be
cooperative learning, especially with the broader definition that it is not
only students working in groups in class to help each other learn, but it is
the whole climate of cooperation in the class to help each other learn. As
for group activities, I think they are most effective, as Jan pointed out,
when the task is challenging but directed. My first attempt at "group work"
was to have students work drill and practice problems for a few minutes
during class time. Such work had minimal effect. When I give students
multitask problems, and maybe don't even talk about all of the skills or
terminology needed until the students bump into the need to use them, I find
group work much more effective than my first attempts.
