We had a presentation at Howarrd CC by Henry Linck on the use of Daedalus
software. It seemed to do what you have in mind. Its on drawback seemed to be
the math symbols. Contact Henry at HLINCK@CCM.HOWARDCC.EDU

I believe FirstClass is fairly useful for the situation you've
described.... It's basically a generic bulletin board system with an
intuitive (Macintosh-style) interface.

However, If you're interested in software specifically designed for
communication of math story problems, check into the SEEN-Math software
designed by Jeff Watt, a math ed professor at Indiana University - Purdue
University at Indianapolis. It's designed to have the students work
through a general problem-solving procedure based on Polya's four steps
for solving problems, and it includes software such as graphing tools for
Venn diagrams, a scientific calculator, and other nice features.
