I was going to ignore Wayne's message (I'm not on break but instead
enduring the final week of courses) but the continuing discussions on
semantics have made me think it is time to add my .02 cents worth. :-)

In my copy of Ray's New Practical Arithmetic (written by Joseph Ray)
printed in 1877, a cord is defined as I defined it. However, I have also
heard it defined as Susan defined it. So who is right, Susan or Joseph Ray?

We can argue this kind of stuff for days (apparently) but there is a more
important issue. We must be aware that there is more than one
interpretation of our words and be sure that we are all using the same
definition. (see discussion on "and or not to and".

In the College Algebra text I use, page 215 defines f(x) = a(x - h)^2 + k
as standard form. However, page 159 earlier in the same text asserts that
a quadratic equation written in standard form would be ax^2 +bx + c=0.
These three authors can't agree in the same book! We are hardly likely to
do better as a group.

As our community becomes ever more a global one, we must do a better job of
communicating and asking questions when there is a chance for ambiguity
(sp). We need to stop assuming that things are defined the same
"anywhere". That is the message I hear others sending and I think the
point is well taken.

BTW, I was raised in Michigan so I know that cords still are used in some
places. My point was only that at one time they were included in word
problems and were quite commonly used. I don't know about texts printed in
GA, but I haven't seen many recent texts from MI that included cords in
their units on measurements!
