Bret,
I must have learned in the same school as you for dealing with the complex
and real number systems and it is how I teach my students. I also tell them
that other books may vary the definitions and they have to go with what the
teacher and book of the course say. As for the differents forms of the
equations, whether they be linear or of higher order, I simply tell my
students that they are mathematical synonyms. This seems to satisfy them.
