1. What school district (the original question came from a
secondary teacher) will pay for every student to have a laptop on
which to do papers, math, science, etc. at school, much less
home? Most parents cannot afford a laptop for each of their
children and the school district is not likely to put out the funds.
2. At the community college level, many (if not most) students are
holding down the equivalent of full time jobs to afford school. Can
we, in all good conscience, require them to spend hundreds of
dollars for a laptop when a GC (under $100 for many good ones)
will suffice? No, they cannot download pdf files, nor word process
that 20 page paper, but most schools/libraries have computers
available to use on site. They are not nearly as convenient as a
laptop, but reality dictates what students can afford.
Just a few wild ramblings on a very hot evening,
Bev
