When teaching courses below calculus:
I always use the words "rate of change", "average rate of change", "rate of
increase", "rate of decrease", "how fast something is increasing", etc.

The only time I might use "slope" is when the focus is teaching the linear
function. Even then I use many of the above.

PS: I have not looked at the test yet, and none of my wording references
percent change. Although, we may need to represent a rate in percent form
on occasion.
