We call this retention rates because we allow students to withdraw up to the
last day of school. Our retention rates are in the 50 to 60 % range. What
is more disturbing is the reduction of performance of students in the next
course of mathematics that they take. In general our students drop
approximately .75 of a grade for each course they take. So that a student
starting in arithmetic with an A has a D coming out of intermediate. I am
experimenting with reform text and style to see if we can change this
outcome. There is some evidence that it may be working but I will not know
for a couple of semesters.
