Quick comment about failure rates and the reform curriculum.

Last week I attended a workshop presented by Dr. Henry Edwards at Un. of GA
where he discussed UGA's new reform college algebra couse, Mathematical Modeling.
This course is being developed for non-math/science majors. The pass rate for
this class was 70% verses 29% in the traditional College Algebra Class.

That's right folks, the pass rate at UGA (and they are suppose to have the
good students) for college algebra is 29%!( I have to add that appoximately 90%
of GA's entering Freshman class is on the HOPE grant, and must maintain a 3.0
GPA to keep it. So these numbers are reflecting the large number of W's)

BTW, Dr. Edwards will be at the Atlanta Conference.

Cheers,
Margie Clark
