At least on my campus, we don't really know why students fail in college
algebra or in developmental classes. We know some stories about some
students -- we don't have data on a representative sample, however.

We don't know the relative impact of the things we control as a faculty --
curriculum, instruction, technology etc -- versus the impact of things we
can't control -- the student's personal experiences and abilities -- versus
the impact of situations that the institution may be able to modify by
offering services such as childcare, math labs, learning communities,
evening classes etc.

This is not to say that we shouldn't try to improve what we can control.
I just think no one should be assigning responsibility for
success and failure when the causes of success and failure are not clear.
