Just a footnote to what I just sent out. I use groups. We've done graphing
on the computer. I try to teach for understanding rather than just learn
procedures. As one student said, "You make us think." And we have loads
of applications here at the tech school level. In our situation the problem
seems to come from two major areas - lack of background (my College Algebra
students got into an argument on how to square 2/3. One finally agreed the
answer was 4/9 which then reduced back to 2/3!!) and lack of study skills.
