We are fairly successful with motivating students in our beginning algebra
course. Unfortunately we have NO intermediate algebra course. As a result,
our college algebra course is pretty watered down. Students who are very
successful in beginning algebra tend to be very successful in our 'college
algebra' course. It is the students that the Asset test places directly in
college algebra and the B, C beginning algebra students that aren't successful.

I use tiles to teach signed numbers and students tell me getting that strong
foundation really helps.
