then, of course, we let them do pottery, or field hockey, opera, culinary
arts, gardening or the study of history. but we don't call these things
"college algebra," anymore than i expect my burgeoning expertise in statistics
to be rewarded with a PhD in ethnomusicology (although that would be nice).
