There are a lot of intelligent people out there who don't understand basic
science. There are a lot of intelligent people out there who can't write a
decent poem or story. There are a lot of intelligent people out there who
have absolutely no artistic or athletic talent. Still we have them take a
general course in each of these topics. Since they'll need algebra to
understand any general "college" course in math.... Well, you get the picture.
