Hi!

I teach high school Mathematics in Alberta, Canada. We are in the process
of changing curriculum in our grade ten program Sept 98. We have 3 streams
of courses for our high school program. The new curriculum will have a
Math 10-20-30 Pure Mathematics with algebra, equations, coordinate
geometry, systems of equations, trig, stats, relations, functions,
quadratic functions & equations, probability, circle geometry, exponents &
log, arithmetic & geometric sequence & series, quadratic relations, perms &
coms. In grade 12 we also have a calculus course called Math 31.

Previously we had a Math 13-23-33 stream that paralleled this program that
didnot have the same depth. Students could switch to the higher challenging
stream if they worked hard & achieved to the more challenging stream. This
parallel stream in the new course of studies will be called Math 10-20-30
Applied. The focus is to work from a recursive approach where students will
use spreadsheets to develop concepts like the calculation of a mortgage.
The mathematics will be developed from linear functions. If the concept
requires a second degree function the process wil be developed from two
linear functions. The approach will try & develop concepts from an applied
approach where ever possible. It is hoped that it will serve students that
learn from a different style than the more lecture & assignment approach
with a lesser focus on algebra. Algebra skills will be taught and used at
the time it is required for the mathematical process & skill.

Since we will be developing and implementing this new program for the next
three years. I thought is would be great to develop a list serve similar to
this format so teachers could exchange ideas, successes, failures what
works & what didn't work. Also exchanging information with regard to
resources. I need to know what hardware & software is required to run a
list serve. What cost is required to maintain the list serve? Also the
time required to set up a list serve and the time required each week to
maintain the list serve. I would appreciate any information required set
up a list serve & to maintain it.
