Jodi,
You may be thinking of the NCTM standards:

where they nicely give the example of the Ferris wheel as an application of
their high school trig standards.

Another possibility is the commercially available "Learning in Motion"
program, where students can collect and analyze data from on-screen movies,
e.g., motion of a Ferris wheel. I think using on-screen video like this is a
great way to collect hard-to-get data!
