MichMATYC Assessment Workshop
A workshop on developing successful assessment programs
Every successful classroom teacher assesses student learning
in a variety of ways. Exams, quizzes, homework, journals and other
classroom assignments are the most obvious ways. But we also use more
subtle assessment tools, such as visual observation. And
we as professionals continuously alter our instruction based on these
formal and informal assessments. In addition, we use assessment to
improve our overall mathematics program.
One of the most common mistakes faculty make when devising an
assessment plan is to try to accomplish too much in too short a time.
NCA recommends allowing twice the estimated time to collect and
analyze assessment results. Without research and the collection of a
wide variety of materials, busy faculty are left to independently
develop original assessment tools. This takes an incredible amount of
time and duplicates work already done by others. Research and
collaboration is a necessary initial step to facilitate the
development of academic outcome assessment in a timely manner. To
assist
and support Michigan mathematics faculty with these assessment issues,
MichMATYC is sponsoring a two-day mathematics assessment workshop.
The workshop will be held on June 28 & 29 at Grand Rapids Community
College. Several assessment "experts" will help worshop participants
create an assessment project that will work for their students and their
institution.
