My university (City University of New York) makes a distinction
between remedial, developmental and compensatory courses. For the
university, a remedial course is no credit, and contains no "college-level"
material. A developmental course has more hours than credits (say a 6-hour
per week, 3-credit course), and contains some college-level material. A
compensatory course is stretched out, typically a version of a course which
meets for two terms instead of the regular one term (but without additional
credit).
