This probably won't help, but: I have seen more students do poorly in
calculus because of algebra skills than any difficulty with calculus. Of
course, I have seen more students do poorly in algebra (rational
expressions) because of difficulty with fractions, etc.

I think a good approach would be to remove the "because students are
supposed to be ready for calculus." Reality (welcome to the '90s) strikes
again.
