In the state of Maryland, the minimum mathematics course requirement for any
college degree (including associates) is a course "at or above the level of
College Algebra." This has been interpreted to mean a course for which the
prerequisite is Intermediate Algebra (what most of us had as Algebra II,
although not necessarily what is currently taught as Algebra II.)
Since this policy was set in 1996, we have been counting students taking
Prealgebra, Elementary Algebra, AND Intermediate Algebra as "developmental"
in terms of reporting. There is a movement to collect the Intermediate
Algebra into a "transitional" category, but it still does not meet
graduation requirements.

There has been some discussion in our state regarding whether Elementary
Algebra should be a required basic skill. I'm trying to gather some
information on what is currently happening in other states.
1. Are students required to take Elementary Algebra as a basic skills course
at your college?
2. When your college reports the number of students who require remediation,
is the number who require Elementary Algebra included in your report?
