I believe that we can give the students context. As an example, this semester I am
taking a coding theory class. We don't have the time in class or in the homework to
do a "real problem", but the basic techniques apply. We to often teach mathematics
out of context, and to many students and instructors it has become nothing more than
a bunch of rules for manipulation.
