We have a general policy that students should complete developmental work before beginning 100-level courses. More strictly, we require students to pass a certain level of reading before they can take most college-level courses. Our students are predominantly ESL and the reading level is what we've determined to be the primary factor that ensures success.

In addition, we try to limit the course loads for students taking many developmental classes so that they can spend the time needed to be successful.

our school (St. Louis CC) is beginning to look at requiring students to
start and/or complete developmental work in English, Math and Reading before
  enrolling in college level courses.
Do any of your schools have a similar policy?
