Subject: Proposed Distance Learning Committee

Hello Everyone!
As a result of a recent action by the AMATYC executive board, I have been
named Interim Chairperson of a proposed Distance Learning Committee. In
accordance with AMATYC's policies and procedures for establishing a
committee, I must first recruit members for the proposed committee.
The purpose of this email is to ask your help. If you are a committee
chair, do you know of anyone on your committee that may be willing to serve
on this committee? The task force recommended that each academic committee
be represented on the proposed distance learning committee. I would also
like to see other interested parties serve on the committee. If you,
yourself are interested, please let me know. Many of you served on the task
force and helped frame the Distance Learning Task Force Report.
If you are interested in being recruited, let me tell you about the task
that you will be asked to undertake.
Goals and Objectives must be identified for the proposed committee. These
should be both short term and long term goals.
Further information pertinent to the final approval of the committee must be
developed(such as justification that there is a need for just a committee --
it may be that the committee will fit structurally as a subcommittee of the
Technology in Mathematics Education Committee.)
Of course, the proposed committee must have a purpose that is consistent
with the goals and objectives of AMATYC.
I know that many of you have a great interest in distance learning. Many
people have strong beliefs about this topic. It is my wish that members of
AMATYC serving on this committee represent a balanced few point. If you are
interested in working via email with me, please let me know. I plan to have
a report to submit to the board by Sept. 1 of this year. This means that
the work will be done throughout the summer.
