Kara,
I have used the book from Wiley publishers by Kime, called Explorations in College Algebra, for two years in my college algebra classes. My students seem to like the book, and I have been pleased with the real life applications and opportunities for collaborative learning.
Another book I have used is by Schaufele and Zumoff called Earth Algebra (used to be from Harper Collins, but I believe it is now Addison Wesley). It has great real life applications, especially for linear, exponential, and composite functions.
Other reform math classes in Arizona are using the book from Delmar by Peterson called "College Mathematics through Applications".
I also use lots of other hands-on, real life activities and require a final project in college algebra. For their final project the students collect data daily for 30 days about an area of their interest (weightlifting, personal diet, growing plants, etc.) ; then they analyze it and share the results with the class.
At the last ArizMATYC conference the textbook reps from McGraw Hill told me they were looking for authors to write reform math textbooks because they had decided it that reform math in some form is here to stay. Maybe we should write a textbook!
Most of the publishers have web sites where you can request sample copies of textbooks.
Hope this helps.
