Whoa! Before we get a rush of interest in LaTeX and TeX, let me explain my
own experience. Here is what you type to produce y=(x^2+9)/(x-3) :
$y=\dfrac{x^{2}+9}{x-3}$
And you don't get to proof it until you print it, or in PCTeX to print
preview it.
And don't get me started on hierarchical numbered lists....

Since my coauthor was using it I thought if he can do it so can I. I
couldn't. Then I found Scientific Workplace from Brooks Cole and now I type
equations and text in the same paragraph quite smoothly, AND he can read the
resulting LaTex code into his Mac.. Friends, don't go there. LaTeX and
PCTeX etc. are for people who don't know about Scientific Workplace, or
who've been at it a long time and now dream in TeX (Hi John!), or for those
who want to learn to program in TeX so they can create their own custom
documents.

Use SW or try its new lookalike, Scientific Notebook. Someone mentioned a
standalone symbol editor that is initiated with the Insert key. That may be
the equation editor portion of SW.
