Not quite, you need $y=\frac{x^2+9}{x-3}$ but this will get you a two
layered fraction with no parenthesies and a horizontal vinculum
making the fraction. To get a one line fraction you would type this,
exactly: $y=(x^2+9)/(x-3)$.

One needs to be careful about the distinction between TeX and
LaTeX. TeX is often arcane and sometimes difficult. LaTeX can be,
but usually is not, and it certainly does not need to be.

It does have a learning period and it is not WYSIWYG, but it is far
from beyond most of the members of this list. My daughter started
using it in Jr High because it was what I used and had at hand when
she wanted to type a paper. Now that she is in college and her
friends use Word or WordPerfect or whatever, she holds out for
LaTeX.

The resulting text looks better and the mathematics is *much*
better.

There are commercial versions of LaTeX but the best one is free, on
the internet. There is also a packaged version on cd which costs
about $20. The only person I know who tried Scientific Workplace
and its cousins told me it was ok, but over priced.

But, whether you use an intermediary like SW or do it by hand (it isn't
hard, really) you ought to think about using it for a few months.
