Well, having pushed LaTeX here, I have to admit that installing it from
the network is harder than using it.

There is a small company that sells windows versions of tex, but they
charge a substantial price. I don't know the details, but it is in the
neighborhood of $100, or maybe twice that. The name of the
company is PCTeX. I just tried, on the off chance that it would work,
http://www.pctex.com and it did. So the commercial version is
available from there. UIC bought a site license from them for what
seemed, several years ago, a rather reasonable price. Since they
charge they have some money to spend on making the installation
simple. The web page says you can download demonstration
versions. (The web page also says that the program is $229 for a
single copy.) [You should remember that TeX is free, as is LaTeX and
the associated fonts and so on. PCTeX is selling, essentially,
packaging, hard copy documentation, a help line, and so on.]

There is an organized set of tex archive sites on the internet. It is
named "ctan", for Comprehensive Tex Archive Network. They have
the source to TeX and to LaTeX and to fonts and peripheral utilities
and so on. I found several locations by doing the following altavista
search "ctan comprehensive tex archive network -cdrom". The last
item, -cdrom, tells altavista not to include any locations that include
the index term "cdrom". Walnut Creek, a shareware cdrom vendor,
publishes CTAN on cd, and they swamp your search with their pages
unless you exclude them.

Don't use the site at Sam Houston State University, ftp.shsu.edu, it is
quite out of date.

There is a nicely done Dos and windows version (second hand, I've
not used it) CD which includes essentially all of TeX and LaTeX as
well as drivers for all kinds of printers. It is 4allTeX. It costs 60
dutch guilders. (Today, according to one net site, 60DG=us$36.60) I
found it at http://www.ntg.nl/ntg/4allcd/4tex_cd/4tex_cd.html

They claim it takes less than one minute to install (that is, you can
run tex and latex directly from the cd).

Finally, the TeX Users Group has a list of many other things, for the
Mac, for Unix in particular.

They also listed something they described as "MiKTeX a highly
regarded setup for Windows 95/NT".

Hope this helps.
