With regard to the evolving focus of this mailing list, the experience at
my university might be of interest.

We started with CUNYTALK for technical discussions among techies at City
University of New York. Particularly because of serious retrenchment
prospects, the list -- the only one at the time linking CUNY faculty
--became a forum for other items of common interest. Almost everyone
agreed that that was the right thing to do.

Since then, a second list -- CUNYTECH -- has been created for technical
matters, and CUNYTALK remains less focused. The number of postings on
CUNYTALK is maybe 100 times that on CUNYTECH.
