I am using a set of texts for Basic Algebra and Intermediate Algebra that
use concept maps through out the course. To be successful, it must be
introduces early and used incrementally and often. I also use journal and
care a high expectation for student reflection and thinking about doing
mathematics. It does not work well if it is viewed as an additional
activity beyound the normal daily activities. I have had good success when
it is done on an almost daily or every other day activity. I also have
individual interviews with students and have them explain their maps and do
some self-evaluation. Unfortunately or fortunately depending on your view I
also know much more about what my students do not have conceptualized.
