During this same period of time, the average age of my students has
dropped. Five years ago I had few 18-20 year olds. Now they often make up
the majority of my classes. Few are interested in learning (not just math)
and many seem content with mastering just enough material to pass the
course and move forward toward completion of their degree objective and
that "piece of paper".
After the semester is under way and I have a chance to get to know my
students a little better, I find that many are under a considerable burden
OUTSIDE the classroom. Single, working moms are common. So are young
people taking more credit hours than they should while working full-time or
nearly so. With so many factors demanding their time, I wonder how some of
them have time to do as much as they do.
just my 2 cents
Brad
