I'm not sure what the high schools in Garden City are doing, but the high
school teachers that I talk with in southwest Virginia are, by and large,
just as frustrated as I am. In fact, a friend of mine who teaches
kindergarten told me recently that I should just be thankful that I'll be
long retired by the time her current crop reaches college age. It seems to
me that (in spite of the lip service from various levels of government and
from many individuals) education is not really a very high priority any
more. Yes, I still have some good students, some students who are hard
working, and a few who are both. They do seem to be a much rarer breed
than they were in days of yore.
