Hello: I have followed some, but not all of the comments about negative
numbers on this listserve. At one moment last week I was inclined to
remind us if we, the mathematics faculty, do not seize the many
opportunities to express a positive attitude about working with signed
numbers, then those students who finally make it to engineering and
economics and many other applied areas will certainly (hopefully) be
prepped by those faculty and fellow students. But... I want to know that my
lower level math students can handle the rudiments. Why should I leave it
to the econ or business or ??? professors to form a foundation in signed
numbers as well as their field?
In other words: why not us?
Maybe....Try the distance formula in the third quadrant for some fun.
