I teach developmental courses and use cooperative groups regularly.
One assessment technique that I like is to give the group 3 or 4 problems
to discuss and then work from the lecture/discussion which occurred a
few minutes earlier. The groups have 5 minutes to do the problems and
turn in the sheet. I then have a student from each group write the
solutions to each problem and we discuss each problem. I do not put a
grade on these sheets, but do go over them and put comments on them
and return them to the groups the next day. This activity is done well
before a test so that I can get feedback on where there are problems.
I also ask the students to write on the back of this sheet any part of the
lecture(presentation) that is still unclear. With the groups, they often
discuss what it is that they don't understand and are able to make a fairly
clear statement about the fuzzy areas.
