Dear Phil:

I am posting this esponse to Phil Campbell's message. I detected a tone of
sarcasm in Phil's recent post to the list which IMHO is at the very least
unprofessional. These positions are certainly not for everyone but it is a
great opportunity for undergrads and grad students who want to make a little
extra money for the holidays. We would appreciate the assistance of readers
of this list in recruiting interested applicants.

Incidently, most test publishers pay item-writers about $10 an item, and if
you are lucky, this comes out to about $10 an hour. Item-classification
requires less skill and is a great way to get your foot in the door in the
test publishing industry. We do not set the rates: our clients do, based on
what the industry pays.

Are you also aware that educational publishers pay book reviews $100 to
review an entire book---which generally takes an enormous amount of hours.
No one seems to complain becuase they like seeing their names in print. My
point is if there were not a lot of people out there taking psoitions for
this rate of pay, compamies (our clients) would be forced to pay more. I do
not feel that Phil's post was appropriate but I do appreciate the opportunity
to provide a little background on this issue that might help make a
difference in the future.
