We have a policy that a student may substitute from a list of courses if a
math teacher certifies that the student has made a "good faith effort".
Fortunately the definition of good faith effort has so far been left up to
me. I define good faith effort as whatever effort it takes to succeed in
the course. This has worked beautifully so far since every one who has made
the good faith effort I've outlined for them has succeeded. No one has
gotten to substitute for a math course and probably won't.
